Classic Hairstyles – The Afro

Classic Hairstyles – The Afro

I think that there is no person on earth who can hear that term and not understand exactly what hairstyle it refers to. The Afro has passed through the years as an iconic hairstyle depicting those who are laid back, easy going, soulful and expressive. There was a strong connotation between hip-hop music and afro’s as many of the rappers and singers of the late 50s and early 60s bore this hairstyle, however the trend has evolutionized along with the people of the time and has become something which we see being worn in people’s every day lives, on the sports field, on the runway and even now worn by rock stars. The Afro just has something some effortlessly cool about it; women manage to ooze this aura of urban beauty while men carry it in a completely imperturbable, collected manner.

The style is meant from those with naturally thick curly hair. Normally if there are differences in hair type one is always able to adjust accordingly but this is not the case with this style. The Afro needs thick and curly hair in order to get the volume that determines the look. This look is, therefore, totally natural in the sense that you do not need any product to keep it in place. But it does require some maintenance:

  • With the use a wide toothed comb brush the hair outwards from the root to the tip.

  • Brush in such a sense that you are brushing outwards and not downwards.
  • Do this using small sections of hair at a time; with thick hair and a strong comb you can often end up damaging your hair or tearing it if you are too aggressive or attempt too much hair at once.
  • Once you have done this a few times your hair will become used to being styled this way it will automatically stay in the Afro shape. You will just need to touch up daily if there are flat pieces (pillow hair) or strands that have gone astray.

This style is definitely made for both the male and female gender, although it is a universal look and everyone knows about it, it is still something that you don’t see too many people sporting. Because of this rarity in the actual wearing of the look I believe it is a seamlessly classic way to make a statement with your hair. Thus, those with thick and curly hair have the perfect opportunity to play around with a new and edgy look, and make it work for them.
