4 tips on how to have the perfect blonde hair

Salon Perfect Blonde Hair

They say blondes have more fun, but let’s get real – caring for and keeping blonde hair looking spectacular takes some time and effort. Not only do you have to combat the natural elements such as the sun, water and air pollution, heat styling that will break down the colour and cause you to go brassy but they also leave your hair dry and prone to breakage.

But do not fear, there are specific maintenance routines that you can do at home that will keep your hair looking like you have just stepped out of the salon.

1. Keep your blonde clean

There are many things that can change the colour of your blonde hair or make it dull. Copper in the water pipes, chlorine in the water treatment or swimming pools will all cause the colour to shift in blonde hair. If you live in an area that has water with a high mineral content then you will find that it will cause your hair to dull. Add to this air pollution that causes oxidation it seems like you will never be able to kee your blonde hair beautiful. Well the solution is a lot simpler than you think! Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3 removes product build-up, chlorine and minerals from hair. This deep-cleansing shampoo washes away impurities while keeping strands strong. I recommend you use this once a week to keep your hair clean shiny and bright if you are swimming a lot over summer then use as needed to maintain clean, bouncy, soft hair. Grab yourself a bottle next time you are in the studio, it is the best $20 you will spend all year!

2. Keep your blonde Hydrated

For many of us blonde is not our natural shade, so we put our strands through the wringer, bleaching, colouring and toning to get from dark to blonde. It can be a harsh process that strips essential oils and nutrients from our hair and damages the cuticle which causes us to lose moisture from the hair at a faster rate. The result if we do not maintain our locks properly can be dry, stretchy and brittle hair.

It is important to invest in the highest quality shampoo and conditioner for your hair. Now needs vary from person to person so I will give you my top recommendations.

Please beware, choosing the perfect purple shampoo can be a little difficult, as some brands may be too drying. Hi-Lift TrueBlonde zero yellow shampoo eliminates unwanted brassy and yellow tones from blonde and grey hair. This fantastic product is 100% vegan, 100% sulphate FREE & 100% paraben FREE. It is enriched with native Kakadu plum extracts to extend, enhance and protect the life of your colour. It comes in a shampoo and conditioner for $20 each. Keep in mind, purple shampoos are not really designed for deep cleaning your hair, so if you find that your hair gets oily quickly I also recommend using Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3 once a week as being sulphate free you will need the occasional deeper clean to keep your hair bright and shiny.

A quick tip: Try leaving the shampoo in your hair for 5 – 20 mins for enhanced toning.

The Paul Mitchell® Ultimate Color Repair® shampoo and conditioner works gently to cleanse and protect color-treated hair. Nourishing ingredients such as Quinoa Color Repair, sugar cane and lemon peel extract add shine and manageability while powerful antioxidants help prevent damage for results that are soft, healthy and gorgeous. Colour treated hair needs a special conditioner. The Ultimate Color Repair® Conditioner works to both hydrate and detangle with Quinoa Colour Repair complex that utilizes the high protein of quinoa to lock in hair color and repair each hair strand. Shea butter, jojoba and soybean oil leave hair feeling and looking soft, shiny and healthy while vitamins work to nourish and moisturize. And at around $25 each it is the cheapest insurance for your hair and colour.

Deep treatments/hair masks are a great way to restore the moisture stripped from your hair during the coloring process. Although you cannot undo the damage done in one step, deep conditioning treatments are vital for colour treated hair, and are a great way to help prevent breakage. All colour services I perform include a 5 step rebuilding and moisturizing treatment protocal to keep the excellent results I highly recommend you do a deep treatment at home once a week.  My favorite of course is the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Hair and Scalp Treatment, this miraculous treatment will repair and moisturize damaged, dry hair with a unique combination of conditioners and nutrients replenishing the hair’s moisture, repair damaged strands and protect from further harm. Plus, a soothing mix of ingredients invigorate and nourish the scalp and only $27.

Now you can pair this with a leave-in conditioner for the ultimate moisture retention system. In the same way that a deep conditioning treatment will up the hydration of your hair, leave-in conditioner will leave your strands extra moisturized. There are two in the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree range that will do the job.

Imagine a moisturizer so versatile that it could be used for skin and hair. Tea Tree Hair and Body Moisturizer® is a leave-in conditioner, after-shave cream and body lotion all in one. Enriched with jojoba seed oil, tea tree oil and peppermint, it leaves hair and skin feeling silky smooth and smelling fantastic. The most versatile product and only $26.

Lavender Mint Conditioning Leave-In Spray is formulated with Vitamin E. This lightweight Lavender Mint Conditioning Leave-In Spray moisturizes hair while leaving it smelling and looking amazing. This frizz-fighting formula smooths unruly strands and delivers a healthy shine that lasts all day long for only $29.

    3. Protect it from the heat

That’s right, back away from the blow dryer! We’re going to keep this tip short and sweet. The less heat styling, the better! As you now know, lifting your hair color to achieve a lighter blonde shade requires your hair cuticle to be damaged. Once the cuticle has been damaged, it makes it difficult for your hair to hold onto the nutrients your scalp produces; leaving your hair dry and brittle. Adding an excessive amount of heat styling to your hair, on top of the chemical process, can really damage and dull your shine. It is always a great idea to give your hair a little vacation from heat styling, every once in awhile, by styling your hair in a cute bun, updo, or braid. But if you are addicted to heat blow dry on the cooler setting, especially if you have to blow dry every day. This will do away with some major damage that hot air can cause. And be sure to always use a heat protectant spray when styling your hair, and never ever skip on a deep conditioning treatment!

    4. Keep it out of the sun

We know this sounds unfortunate – I mean who doesn’t love some sun! Sadly, overexposure to the sun is not only damaging to your skin, but also for your blonde hair. Harmful UV rays can dry out your locks, and turn your beautiful blonde shade a brassy shade of orange. If you are planning a fun day in the sun, we recommend bringing a cute hat along to protect your hair, and your skin, from the sun. If hats aren’t your thing, then opt for a UV/heat protectant. Almost all of the products mentioned above contain UV protectors, just another reason to invest in  professional quality shampoo, conditioners and styling products

There you have it! These four tips will help restore that luster to your locks, and keep your hair looking refresh and healthy!
